Junya Watanabe Autumn/Winter 2015
These images from Junya Watanabe’s recent show in Paris seem to leap off the page don’t they! We are so used to seeing flat, 2-D images of fashion, but here the Japanese designer’s clever use of materials and textures has created quite a spectacular 3-D effect.
With commercialism currently trumping creativity on the catwalk, there seems to be fewer and fewer shows on the schedules which really push the boundaries. Yes, wearability is obviously important, but we also need designers with vision to explore new ideas and concepts though our clothes in order to move fashion forward.
Junya Watanabe, a protégé of Comme Des Garçons’ Rei Kawakabou, is one of those creatives whose collections can seem challenging at times. But while the looks he creates may be difficult for many of us to wear in their purest form, the distilled details are likely to appear on our High Streets in the not so distant future…
