She Walks in Beauty

black and white photography

The title of this shoot for L’Officiel Malaysia’s May 2016 issue was taken from one of Lord Byron’s most famous poems. ‘She Walks in Beauty’ is said to have been inspired by the English poet’s encounter with his first cousin’s beautiful wife, Anne Beatrix Wilmot, and he describes her beauty using contrasts of dark and light…

She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Photographer Alexandre Felix and stylist Coline Peyrot have, in turn, used these contrasts as inspiration for this darkly beautiful shoot.

Winter Sun

sunglasses

With summer firmly in our sights, advertisements for eyewear are now filling the pages of glossy magazines and our internet feeds, typically featuring beach-ready models in sun-drenched locations or snapped under the glare of studio lights. However, one Australian brand has taken a rather different approach to showcase its current collection.

Valley Eyewear chose the snow-covered hills surrounding a former Communist Party building in Bulgaria to capture their latest campaign, and with quite dramatic results…

Mario Testino: No Limits

Kate Moss

Kate Moss / British Vogue / 2008

If you’re lucky enough to live in or near Copenhagen, or are planning a visit over the summer, then if you’re a fashion lover, Mario Testino’s ‘No Limits’ exhibition is a must-see.

Staged at the city’s GL STRAND until 18th September, the celebrated photographer’s work is being shown across three floors, highlighting three distinct themes across his vast body of work: high fashion imagery, nudes and royal portraiture.

There is also the chance to see a short film featuring the man himself, in conversation with filmmaker Jesse Dylan, where he talks about his life, work and many famous, and infamous, subjects.

And although the exhibition was specially conceived for Copenhagen, a city much admired by Mario Testino for its sense of freedom, I for one hope that it will travel closer to home.

Dark Angel

Gothic fashion

This haunting collection of images, taken as part of a recent fashion story on Interviewmagazine.com, taps into my love of all things gothic.

Styled by Ludivine Poiblanc, Dutch model Julia Bergshoeff wears pieces from this season’s couture and ready-to-wear collections, shot by Fabien Baron against a series of darkly romantic  backdrops.

The way the image gallery has been edited caught my eye too, with pictures cropped and shaped to create a clever collage effect…

Peter Lindbergh x Vogue Italia

Peter Lindbergh x Vogue Italia | MODE+MAISON

This captivating collection of photographs was shot, unmistakably, by Peter Lindbergh. The German photographer’s cinematic, typically black and white style is a favourite of fashion editors and brands alike, and these elegant images of Italian model Mariacarla Boscono were published in last month’s Haute Couture issue of Vogue Italia…

Vogue 100: A Century of Style

This year, British Vogue is celebrating its centenary, and to mark the milestone London’s National Portrait Gallery is hosting ‘Vogue 100: A Century of Style’, an exhibition featuring the stars of fashion and film, as well as royalty, who have graced the influential magazine’s pages over the years.

This great video short gives a snap shot of what to expect at the event, which is showcasing work from the glamorous, think  Cecil Beaton and Norman Parkinson, to grunge-era Corinne Day, and everything in between.

Three years in the planning, the exhibition runs until 22nd May. A must-see!
