She Walks in Beauty

black and white photography

The title of this shoot for L’Officiel Malaysia’s May 2016 issue was taken from one of Lord Byron’s most famous poems. ‘She Walks in Beauty’ is said to have been inspired by the English poet’s encounter with his first cousin’s beautiful wife, Anne Beatrix Wilmot, and he describes her beauty using contrasts of dark and light…

She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Photographer Alexandre Felix and stylist Coline Peyrot have, in turn, used these contrasts as inspiration for this darkly beautiful shoot.

Insta Fashion | MODE+MAISON

Cleverly playing with the concept of the Insta-Grid, this shoot for the Spring/Summer 2016 edition of Flair magazine features one of my favourite models, Jamie Bochert.

The fractured images, photographed by Ezra Petronio and styled by Sissy Vian, are a stark reminder of the impact of social media on the fashion industry, and how it has changed the way we view, and consume, clothing.

Sheer Delight

Sheer Delight | MODE+MAISON

Spring’s sheer trend may be tricky to wear, but it doesn’t stop me admiring these dreamy dresses, which have been given a dose of attitude by model Kate Hutchinson Driscoll.

Sheer Delight | MODE+MAISON

Shot for the April 2016 issue of Marie Claire UK by David Roemer, Kate has been styled by Jayne Pickering in a variety of designer looks, including this dramatic tiered dress from Sarah Burton’s latest collection for Alexander McQueen…

Come to the Cabaret!

Come to the Cabaret | MODE+MAISON

These spectacular sketches were penned by Jean Paul Gaultier.  The French designer, who has in the past created tour costumes for the likes of Madonna and Kylie Minogue, has long wanted to create costumes for  a cabaret show, and this autumn his ambition will finally be realised.

To be staged at the famous Friedrichstadt-Palast venue in Berlin, ‘The One Grand Show’ will feature over 500 of John Paul Gaultier’s costumes on a cast of over 100 performers, and you can clearly see many of his style signatures in these colourful images. I love the feathers and fishnets!

‘The One Grand Show’ is scheduled to run until the summer of 2018.  Another reason to visit Germany’s uber-cool cultural capital.

The Hoodie Goes Haute

Fashion’s fascination with streetwear shows no signs of waning, and given that many design houses now adopt a wardrobe approach when creating their collections – “I start the season with a list of clothing…”, admitted Vetements and Balenciaga creative Demna Gvasalia recently – it was never going to be long before the hoodie was given the haute treatment.

The autumn/winter runways were peppered with upscaled versions of this sporty staple, and if you’re considering whether, and how, to work a hoodie into your own wardrobe, this great little video may just inspire you.

Oh and by the way, that  Alexander Wang longline hoodie-come-coat has my name on it…

Alice is a Punk

These arresting images of model Alice Metza come hot on the heels of my ode to the fishnet (here).

Featured in the spring/summer 2016 edition of Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book, the Los Angeles native has been styled by Carine herself for this dramatic shoot, which is a clever combination of punk, tribal and heritage influences.

And credit must go to the hair and make-up team, Didier Malige and Isamaya French, too.  Quite stunning.

Edie: The Wild Child

The April 2016 issue of Vogue Japan features a ‘new collections’ fashion spread starring British beauty and model favourite of mine Edie Campbell.

Styled by flamboyant Italian editor-at-large Anna Dello Russo and shot by photography duo Iango Henzi and Luigi Murenu, Edie models key pieces from the spring season.

I’ve chosen my favourite shots here, which include pieces by Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and label of the moment Vetements…

And although, unsurprisingly, it’s the black and white shots I’ve posted, there are some great colour images in the spread, which you can see by clicking the link below.
